Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, May December lead pack with most nominations

December 13, 2023: The true story about the scientist who led the American development of the atomic bomb went nuclear with the Florida Film Critics Circle. Voters awarded Oppenheimer 10 nominations, including Best Picture, Cillian Murphy for Best Actor, Robert Downey, Jr for Best Supporting Actor and Christopher Nolan for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.

Killers of the Flower Moon earned eight nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress for Lily Gladstone, and Best Ensemble. May December also picked up eight nominations, among which were Best Actress for Natalie Portman, Best Supporting Actress for Julianne Moore, and Best Supporting Actor for Charles Melton. May December also earned nods for Todd Haynes (Best Director) and Samy Burch (Best Original Screenplay).

Celine Song’s much-acclaimed Past Lives, about childhood friends whose reunion forces them to confront the nature of their relationship, garnered five nominations, including Best First Film. As did The Holdovers, starring Paul Giamatti (nominated for Best Actor) as a curmudgeonly prep school teacher watching over a troublesome student (Best Supporting Actor and Breakthrough nominee Dominic Sessa).

Fourth place was shared by two international features, Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron and Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest. Both marked the first features of each filmmaker in a decade. Along with nominations for Best Foreign-Language Film, the former also earned a nod for Best Picture, while the latter was shortlisted for Best Director.

FFCC will announce its winners on Dec. 21.
